[Joyce's spelling: Telemachia, Eolus, Nausikaa, Eumeus, etc]

if you examine the manuscripts, there's no excuse for writing TelemachiaD, AEolus, NausiCaa, or EumAEus (you might as well say Finnegan's Wake)

in his notes, Eolus is always "Eol"
(in FW even Aesop is Esop, challengingly)
there are still some initial "Ae"s in FW [fweet-11] but no æs or Æs
FW1 had 4 'œ's that have been replaced by 'oe's in FW2

ligatures added between 1922 and 1961:

Cloacae 126 (131 YES)
"Irish games in the Phoenix park" 303 (316 YES)
"amid phoenix flames" 470 (498 YES)

coelo 346 (362 YES)
praestitisti 346 (362 YES)
foetus in foetu 390 (410 YES)

ligatures removed between 1922 and 1961:

Phoenix
130 "murder in the Phœnix park" (136 NOT)
162 "pot as big as the Phœnix Park" (170 NOT)

Misericordiæ (only one) 94 YES (97 NOT) 657 YES (705 YES)

unchanged:

Gît-le-Cœur 43 (43 YES)
"Ægospotami" 129 (133 YES)
"Come, wandering Ængus of the birds." 206 (214 YES)
"Ængus of the birds" 209 (217 YES)
"Wandering Ængus I call him." 239 (249 YES)
"the lower gate of Phœnix Park" 242 (252 YES)
"polo ground of the Phœnix park" 442 (467 YES)
"city to the Phœnix Park and vice versa" 633 (681 YES)
cœlum 326 (340 YES)
Cœla 474 (504 YES)
hæc 143 (149 YES)
manœuvre 593 (638 YES)
subpœnaed 600 (646 YES)
onomatopœic 686*2 (734 YES)
Encyclopaedia NOT 665 (713 NOT)
encyclopaedic NOT 397 (417 NOT)
archeological NOT 641 (688 NOT)
maestro NOT 37 (37 NOT) NOT 219 (229 NOT)

the 1961 Ulysses opts for somewhat more consistent 'ae' and 'oe' ligatures including the extremely silly-looking 'Phœnix'-- i just can't believe Joyce wanted this

(i'm guessing gabler removed most/all of these...?)

always A.E. for the person
"A. E. the mastermystic... A. E. has been telling... pulling A. E.'s leg"
"the eminent poet A. E."
"A. E.: what does that mean?"
"A. E. has been telling some yankee interviewer... A.E., Arval, the Name Ineffable"
"A.E.I.O.U."
"Mummed in names: A. E., eon"
"that frump today. A. E. Rumpled stockings."
